Aromatherapy for our furry and feathered friends
Let start with, What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy, also known as essential oil therapy, is the skilled and controlled use of essential oils to restore or maintain health and well-being. Essential oils are volatile, aromatic liquids in the rind, flower, leaf, stem, root, wood, bark or resin of aromatic plants that are obtained by distillation, expression, and CO2 or solvent extraction. Fragrant oils are synthetically produced and are not therapeutic.
Did you know that…
Dogs can identify smells up to 100,000 better than humans? This is because they have 40 times more scent receptors than us, because they have a remarkable olfactory memory and their world revolves around scent. Aromatherapy is ideal for use with dogs.
In the mid-1800s there were scientific studies performed in both France and Germany regarding the effects of essential oils on animals. Due to positive clinical results, the practice of veterinary aromatherapy was not uncommon in these countries by the mid-1900s..
So how does aromatherapy work?
One of the most beneficial ways to receive aromatherapy is through inhalation. When the scent molecules enter the bloodstream through the lungs, there is a physiological response. This is because the olfactory bulb is linked to the limbic system, which is the seat of memory, emotion and learning. Aromatherapy can also be accepted through topical application. When applied and absorbed by the skin it is taken into the capillaries and then carried into the bloodstream. Where it is circulated and distributed throughout the body.
Is aromatherapy safe for dogs?
Safety starts with dilution. Pure essential oils are highly concentrated and undiluted and are not safe to use on dogs or other animals.
Diluted essential oil formulations and remedies prevent overwhelming your dog’s sense of smell, irritating skin or mucous membranes or causing sensitization. For best practice single or blends should not exceed 2% (or less) this ratio in most cases is effective for dogs and other animals large and small.
When aromatherapy is used in recommended safe dilutions, it can be an excellent holistic solution to assist in creating a calm environment, to soothe itchy or irritated skin, still the digestive upsets, repel insects and heal infections. It also can encourage the human-animal connection, ease the process of behaviour modification and improve overall health and well-being.
